Australian Place Names

These places actually exist:

Wooloomooloo
Kirribilli
Wagga Wagga
Monkey Mia (there are no monkeys!)
Borroloola
Manjimup
Oodnadatta
Coolangatta
Warrnambool
Wollongong
and believe it or not - Lake Disappointment

There are lots of others too and I can barely pronounce almost anywhere in this country. Australia's most famous beach is arguably Bondi. Pronounce it - it's not Bon-dee. Pretty much anywhere in Sydney is like this for me. Asking for directions or talking about where I went gets a few laughs =)

I think there's something to be said for countries who are islands, or islands who are countries, whichever way you want to think about it. Look up Hawaii's state fish (used to be national fish). And, the island with England, Scotland, and Wales has some prett odd names on it, as does the Irish Isle.

It's like being on an island insulates you from the rest of the world's ridicule until your names become permanent, and then it's too late.
